Latest U.S. Drought Monitor Released: The Rain from Yesterday was MUCH Needed!

| November 14, 2024 @ 1:29 pm

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report has been released as of today.  The data though is valid as of November 12.  So what you see does not count the much needed rainfall that came into the state as of 7am this morning.  We need more soaking rain to help bring more relief from the drought but it was nice to get that drink of water!  Some areas walked away with 1-2.5 inches of rain.  Most of that into the west-central to southwest part of the state….right in areas of extreme drought.

For example, a good part of Hale County is under extreme drought.  Between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain fell in that area over the past 24 hours.  The highest amounts over 2.5 inches plus reported in Fayette and Lamar Counties, both of which are under moderate to severe drought.

This report does show that as of Nov 12, the extreme drought (D3) had expanded a bit to 4.68% of the state.  The severe drought (D2) had also expanded, up to 38.5% of the state.  A wee portion of far NW Alabama has no drought.
