Weekend Showers Possible; Cooler Air About Six Days Away
RADAR CHECK: We have a few showers on radar this afternoon across Southwest Alabama, otherwise there is a mix of sun and clouds across the state with temperatures mostly in the 70s. Some of the warmer spots are in the low 80s. Look for a low tonight in the 60s; low clouds will form after midnight.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Scattered showers will be around both tomorrow and Sunday, but rain distribution won’t be very even. High resolution model data suggests the most widespread rain will across Northwest Alabama. The sky will feature more clouds than sun… highs will be in the upper 70s tomorrow, followed by low to mid 70s Sunday.
NEXT WEEK: A few showers remain possible Monday, followed by generally dry weather Tuesday. Then, a cold front will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms late Wednesday and Wednesday night, followed by noticeably cooler air Thursday and Friday. Highs drop into the 60s over the northern half of the state, with lows in the 40s by the end of the week. Still no sign of freezing temperatures for the next 10-15 days… See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.
TROPICS: Hurricane Rafael, with sustained winds of 100 mph, is about 475 miles east of the southern tip of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico this afternoon. It is moving to the west at 9 mph.
The latest NHC forecast shows continued slow weakening, and a full loop in the middle of the Gulf over the next five days. Rafael is then forecast to dissipate over the southwest Gulf by the middle of next week without making landfall.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: A few isolated showers are possible for the high football playoff games across Alabama tonight, but most stadiums will be dry. The sky will be mostly cloudy with temperatures falling through the 70s.
Tomorrow UAB will host UConn at Protective Stadium in downtown Birmingham (1:30p CT kickoff); expect a mix of sun and clouds with an outside risk of a passing shower during the game. Temperatures will hover in the 78-81 degree range.
Alabama will be in Baton Rouge to take on LSU tomorrow night (6:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be cloudy with a shower or two possible … temperatures will fall slowly through the 70s. Some lightning/thunder can’t be ruled out, but isn’t likely.
