Midday Nowcast: Very Warm and Humid; More Clouds than Sun with Isolated Showers
MORE CLOUDS WITH SOME SHOWERS: Isolated showers continue to highlight our forecast today and tomorrow. Most of the activity will be over southern portions of the state and rather scattered in nature. The chance of any one spot seeing rain will be in the 20-30 percent range. We will continue to see more clouds than sun and temperatures will remain above average with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For November 7th, the average high for Birmingham is 68° and the average low is 45°. The record high is 85° set in 2022, while the record low is 24° set in 1993. We average 0.13” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 1.86” set in 1995.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: A few isolated showers are possible for the high football playoff games across Alabama tomorrow night, but most stadiums will be dry. The sky will be mostly cloudy with temperatures falling through the 70s.
ACROSS THE USA: A strong Santa Ana wind event will bring widespread Extremely Critical fire weather conditions to many areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties into Thursday. Heavy snow is impacting the central to southern Rockies and nearby High Plains. Hurricane Rafael continues to bring tropical storm conditions to the Florida Keys.
WEEKEND WEATHER: The overall pattern won’t change much through the weekend. If anything, our rain chances will increase some for the weekend and our forecast will feature scattered showers and some storms at times both Saturday and Sunday, but again, rain distribution won’t be very even. The warm weather will persist as temperatures will remain in the upper 70s to lower 80s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday UAB will host UConn at Protective Stadium in downtown Birmingham (1:30p CT kickoff); expect a mix of sun and clouds with a passing shower possible during the game. Temperatures will hover in the 78-81 degree range.
Alabama will be in Baton Rouge to take on LSU Saturday night (6:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be cloudy with a few periods of rain possible during the game… temperatures will fall slowly through the 70s.
NEXT WEEK: The weather trends drier for the first half of the week with highs in the 70s and 80s, which continue to be well-above average for mid-November in Alabama. However, on Thursday a strong cold front will dive south and move through Alabama. The front will bring the chance of rain and storms and then much cooler weather for Friday and the weekend; highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s.
HURRICANE RAFAEL: Rafael is moving toward the west-northwest near 9 mph. A turn toward the west is expected later today, with this general motion continuing through the weekend. On the forecast track, Rafael is expected to move over the southern Gulf of Mexico for the next few days. Data from the Air Force Hurricane Hunters indicate that maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 100 mph with higher gusts. Some additional weakening is anticipated during the next few days. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles. The estimated minimum central pressure is 971 mb (28.68 inches).
Rafael will encounter strong winds aloft, dry air, and cooler sea surface temperatures by the weekend which should induce rapid weakening, and there it very possible it will be sheared apart before reaching the U.S. coast.
Also, in the Southwestern Atlantic, a trough of low pressure over the northern Leeward Islands continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some gradual development of this system is possible during the next couple of days while it moves westward near the Greater Antilles. Regardless of development, locally heavy rains are possible across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the southeastern Bahamas through Saturday. Formation chance through 7 days…low…20 percent. The next name up is Sara.
