Midday Nowcast: Warm and Dry Days Ahead

| October 22, 2024 @ 12:31 pm

WARMING TREND CONTINUES: Compared to last week, Alabama is much warmer today. This will continue throughout this week, with afternoon highs in the 80s each day this week. We stay dry this week, too, with no rain chances through Saturday. Overnight lows will remain in the 50s, so evening and morning temperatures will feel quite nice.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For October 22nd, the average daytime high temperature is 74 degrees and the average low is 51 degrees. The record high temperature was 89 degrees set in 1941, and the record low was 28 degrees set in 1987. The average amount of rain on this day is 0.08 inches.

ACROSS THE USA: Most of the country is dry today, with only areas in the Northwest seeing some precipitation. 80 degree temperatures extend far north into areas of New England and into the Great Plains. The Northwest corner of the country is seeing temperatures in the 50s to 60s.

WEEKEND WEATHER: A cold front will traverse across the South this weekend, which will bring cooler temperatures for next week. Most of Alabama will still be in the 80s on Saturday, but we will creep back into the 70s on Sunday. Overnight lows will drop back into the 40s. Rain chances are slim, but not entirely impossible. Some models suggest rain on Sunday and Monday, however this is unlikely due to very low moisture being present in the atmosphere.

TROPICS: Oscar is now a very weak tropical storm. Winds are currently at 40 mph, and it has a pressure of 1007 mb. We expect Oscar to become post tropical later today. There is no threat to the United States with this system. Otherwise, the Atlantic is quite calm right now. However, hurricane season does run until the end of November.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 111.2F at Culiacan, Mexico. The lowest observation was -85F at Vostok, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 89F at Phoenix, AZ. The lowest observation was 15F at Gulkana, AK.
