Midday Nowcast: Sunny with Soothing 60s Today; Frosty Temperatures Tonight
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WEATHER: Sunshine in fully supply today, and that will continue the rest of the week as we are forecasting sunny, very pleasant days, and clear, cold nights. High are in the 60s today and tomorrow, but should return to the 70s Friday. Tomorrow morning looks to be our coldest morning this week when much of North Alabama will dip into the 30s for the first time this season. Frost advisories have been issued for all the Tennessee Valley of the state and into portions of Central Alabama.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For October 16th, the average high for Birmingham is 76° and the average low is 54°. The record high is 90° set in 1897, while the record low is 37° set in 1991. We average 0.11” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 2.28” set in 1911.
WEEKEND AND BEYOND: Dry weather continues; expect sunshine in full supply Saturday and Sunday with highs in the 70s. And, the long dry spell continues through next week and temperatures moderate some with highs closer to 80 degrees. Statistically, October is the driest month of the year for Alabama and much of the Deep South, so little to no rain in Alabama this time of year is completely normal.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Perfect weather for high school football games across Alabama Friday night. A clear sky with temperatures in the mid 60s at kickoff, falling into the 50s during the second half.
Saturday Auburn plays Missouri in Columbia (11:00a CT kickoff)… the sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from near 68 at kickoff into the low 70s during the second half.
Alabama will be in Knoxville to take on Tennessee (2:30p CT kickoff)… it will be a sunny day. About 70 degrees at kickoff, falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter.
And, UAB will be in Tampa to play South Florida (2:30p CT kickoff)… the weather will be sunny and warm with temperatures in the low to mid 80s.
IN THE TROPICS: In the Central Tropical Atlantic, Invest 94L is a broad area of low pressure located over the central tropical Atlantic is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. This system is forecast to move generally westward to west-northwestward, and environmental conditions appear marginally conducive for gradual development during the latter part of this week. A tropical depression could form as the system moves near the Leeward and Virgin Islands late this week. Formation chance through 7 days…medium…40 percent.
It is still too early to know if this moves into the Gulf of Mexico or impacts any part of the U.S. coastline. Simply something to watch for now.
Also, in the western Caribbean, showers and thunderstorms over the southwestern Caribbean Sea are associated with a broad area of low pressure. Some gradual development is possible if the system stays over water while it moves slowly northwestward towards Central America. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible across portions of Central America later this week. Formation chance through 7 days…low…20 percent.
