Tropics Update: What We’re Watching

| October 11, 2024 @ 10:40 pm

In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, we are hoping that we will not see anymore landfalling storms this year. We are beginning to approach the end of hurricane season (June 1 – November 30), but we do still have another month or so of favorable conditions for tropical cyclone formation. Currently, sea surface temperatures in the Gulf are still quite warm, even after Milton stirred the waters as a strong hurricane. Most of the gulf remains above 27 degrees Celsius.

In the Tropics right now, Tropical Storm Leslie is still active. Plus, the area that was near the African Coast now has a 40% chance of development over the next 7 days.

Leslie remains a tropical storm over the Atlantic, with current winds at 50 mph. Its minimum pressure is at 1001 mb. Leslie is moving to the east, and the NHC notes that the storm will start to dissipate by the beginning of next week. There is no threat to land associated with Leslie.

The one disturbance marked by the NHC as having a chance to develop is currently located near the Cabo Verde Islands. Right now, the NHC is forecasting the area to develop into a tropical storm sometime this weekend, but then quickly weaken afterwards. Further redevelopment is not expected once it weakens due to harsh atmospheric conditions.

That’s all for now. If anything changes, we will keep you informed. Have a great weekend, and enjoy the warm days while they last! A big cool down comes next week.
