Midday Nowcast: Fantastic Fall Friday and Wonderful Weekend Weather
LAYER WEATHER: Jackets in the morning and short sleeves in the afternoon, it is that time of year where you have to dress in layers. The mornings are clear and chilly with widespread 40s and 50s. The days are full of sunshine, and will feature highs in the mid and upper 70s, with some lower 80s. No change through the weekend across Alabama.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Expect a clear sky for the high school games across Alabama tonight with temperatures falling from the low 70s at kickoff, into the 60s during the second half and maybe even 50s. You’ll want to take a light jacket for sure.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For October 11th, the average high for Birmingham is 78° and the average low is 56°. The record high is 88° set in 2010, while the record low is 35° set in 1906. We average 0.10” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 3.50” set in 1902.
USA BRIEF: Moderate to major river flooding is forecast throughout much of Florida through this weekend, in the wake of Hurricane Milton. Dry, gusty winds ahead of a cold front crossing the Great Lakes will contribute to elevated to critical fire weather today over parts of Michigan. Further west, this front will press across the central Plains on Saturday with possible critical fire weather.
NEXT WEEK: The pattern doesn’t change as we roll into next week. It is a dry forecast for the Deep South with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights. Cooler air arrives next week; highs drop into the 60s with lows in the 40s over the northern 2/3 of the state by Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact, 30s are expected to show up across northern portions of the state and which will by far be the coldest air since last spring in Alabama. And, still no sign of any meaningful rain for Alabama for at least the next 7-10 days as the long dry spells continues.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tomorrow, Alabama hosts South Carolina (11:00a CT kickoff) at Bryant-Denny Stadium… the sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from near 77 at kickoff, into the low 80s by the final whistle.
UAB is on the road; they play Army in West Point NY (11:00a CT kickoff)… the weather will be dry. With a sunny sky, temperatures rise from 68 degrees at kickoff into the low 70s by the fourth quarter.
IN THE TROPICS: Milton doesn’t exist anymore, Leslie is a tropical storm with winds of 60 mph and will remain a fish storm and dissipate in the coming days.
The other area the NHC is monitoring, very recent satellite-derived wind data indicate that winds to tropical storm force are occurring over portions of the Cabo Verde Islands in association with an area of low pressure centered near the southwestern portion of the archipelago. However, the satellite data showed that the circulation is elongated, and the associated shower and thunderstorm activity remains disorganized. Some additional development is possible, and a short-lived tropical storm could form while the system moves westward or west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph across the Cabo Verde Islands and eastern tropical Atlantic today. On Saturday, environmental conditions are forecast to become less conducive, and further development appears unlikely after that time. Regardless of development, winds to tropical storm force and areas of heavy rain are likely to continue over portions of the Cabo Verde Islands through tonight. Formation chance through 7 days…medium…50 percent.
