Latest U.S. Drought Monitor: No Counties in an Extreme Drought; Still Some Rain Needed

| October 3, 2024 @ 6:30 pm

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor was released today and we have some improvement for Alabama, but still most of the state in some sort of drought category.

Overall, the state received much less rain than many across the southeast from Helene.  The eastern part of the state did receive more rain from that storm. 10.67% of Alabama under no drought conditions now and that is mostly east. There are no areas now under an extreme drought category.  For the severe drought, last week, 7.75% of the state was under those conditions, down to 0.16% this week.  That is up in northern Limestone County.

We still have over 89% of the state dealing with abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions and see no relief from that anytime soon.
