Showers Around Huntsville Currently; An Early Look at What The Gulf Has in Store Next Weekend

| September 29, 2024 @ 1:52 pm

Right now, we are seeing a line of showers move across northern Alabama. Here is a radar snapshot of this rain:

This line of rain will continue to move in from the northwest, before exiting the state later this afternoon. We will not see any severe storms with this, or even any storms at all. We should continue to only see light showers passing by. Areas south of Birmingham will not see any rain today.

We have started mentioning a new tropical system that could form in the Gulf later this week. Right now, model guidance is all over the place- both from run-to-run, and from model-to-model. The latest run of the GFS model is much different than its previous run, and the 12Z GFS run is much different from the 12Z Euro model run. So, with this being said, we cannot deduce with certainty what will actually occur next weekend just yet. However, we can say that we are confident in the development of some sort of tropical system, but this confidence is much less regarding timing/track/intensity/etc.

The 12Z run of the GFS model shows a weak tropical cyclone forming over the Gulf, and moving towards the Florida Coast. Then, it shows the storm stalling off the coast of Florida for a few hours before heading towards the Louisiana/Mississippi Coastline. Right now, it appears likely that this system could affect anywhere from the New Orleans area to the Big Bend Region of Florida. Keep in mind that model data is changing with each run, so this information will likely change in the coming days.

After the occurrence of Hurricane Helene, we fully understand that tropical systems are an extremely sensitive subject. Millions of people were impacted by this devastating storm, and our thoughts and prayers are with each individual who have had to deal with the aftermath of Helene. With this being said, our main goal is to keep you informed regarding upcoming weather systems, and never to scare or mislead you. That is why we cannot yet say with certainty exactly what will occur with this upcoming tropical system.
