Extreme Wind Warning Issued for Portions of South Central Georgia

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued an Extreme Wind Warning for Lowndes, Thomas, and Brooks Counties in south central Georgia until 2:00 AM EDT. As of 11:06 PM EDT, Doppler radar detected extreme winds associated with the eyewall of Hurricane Helene, currently moving onshore about 16 miles southwest of Perry at a speed of 25 mph.

This situation poses an extremely dangerous and life-threatening threat to the area. Locations affected include Lake Park, Valdosta, Quitman, Thomasville, and several others.

Precautionary Actions:
Take cover immediately! Treat the approaching winds as if a tornado is imminent and seek shelter in a safe room.
The safest place is a reinforced interior room, away from windows.
Get under sturdy furniture and use mattresses, blankets, or pillows to protect your head and body.
Remain in your safe location until the extreme winds have passed.
