Eyewall Starting to Move Ashore Along the Big Bend of Florida
As of 10:00 PM EDT, the eyewall of the extremely dangerous Category 4 Hurricane Helene is starting to move ashore along Florida’s Big Bend coast. Catastrophic winds are expected to spread across the region in the next few hours. This is a life-threatening situation, and people should stay sheltered until the storm fully passes. Do not leave shelter when the eye passes, as calm conditions will be temporary and dangerous winds will quickly return.
A monitoring tower in Cedar Key has recorded sustained winds of 59 mph with gusts up to 78 mph. In Clearwater Beach, a tide gauge shows water levels 6.18 feet above normal, while Cedar Key reports levels at 5.76 feet above normal, indicating significant flooding.
At 10:00 PM, the center of Helene was located at 29.5°N and 84.1°W, about 65 miles west-northwest of Cedar Key and 65 miles south of Tallahassee. The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds are 140 mph, moving north-northeast at 24 mph. The central pressure is 939 mb (27.72 inches).
