Flash Flood Warning for Parts of Lee & Russell Co. Until 1am Friday

| September 26, 2024 @ 7:43 pm

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Lee County in east-central Alabama and northern Russell County in southeastern Alabama until 1:00 AM CDT.

At 7:37 PM CDT, thunderstorms were producing heavy rain in the area, with 1 to 2 inches of rain already fallen. The rain is expected to continue at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with an additional 2 to 3 inches possible. Flash flooding is either happening now or expected to start soon.

The main hazard is flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. This includes flooding in small creeks, streams, urban areas, streets, highways, and low-lying areas with poor drainage.

Locations at risk of flooding include Auburn, Phenix City, Opelika, Smiths Station, and several other nearby communities.

If you encounter flooded roads, remember: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Be extra careful at night when flooding is harder to spot.
