Damage in Blount County from Storm; Marginal Risk Remains for the Central Parts of the Area
This image of storm damage was taken by Kelly Shoemaker from the town of Cleveland in Blount County. The EMA director for Blount County. David Horton, stated that, “Some of these trees are showing signs of a possible tornado. First responders on scene are stating a few of these trees in the Locust Fork/Cleveland area are twisted.”
Another report from Facebook states, “I’m pretty sure we had rotation over our farm in Locust Fork…or straight line winds off of one. We have 4 fences down tin was lifted up on my husbands parents’ house. Our mailbox was pulled off the post. Our friends probably a mile down the road had no wind. We got stuck in our barn when it started and the wind was pulling/pushing us around. I would say we had God on our side this evening!”
Mark Linhares from NWS Birmingham says, “The description could actually point a few directions. Looking at the damage image shows large pieces, which points another direction. The radar did have some weak rotation in the area. We will most likely send someone up there to look tomorrow. It really could be straight line or tornado and rather weak.”
And this is just one reason why the Storm Prediction Center has a Marginal Risk for severe weather for the rest of the night for the central parts of the area, which includes the cities of Cullman, Oneonta, Birmingham, Hoover, Clanton, Brent, and Selma. A brief tornado or damaging winds up to 60 mph remain possible through at least 11pm tonight.
