A Brief Central Alabama Update Leading Up to Midnight

| September 12, 2024 @ 12:01 am

Radar at 11:45 pm shows plenty of rain across the area, with most of the action over on the west side of the state (west of I-65). There is also a cluster of rain and storms over the extreme eastern parts of the area which stretches over into the Atlanta metropolitan area. For the rest of tonight, rain will be likely for nearly the entire area, with slightly smaller chances over the extreme northeastern locations.

Thursday will be a very wet and windy day across Central Alabama, and a few isolated severe storms will be possible in the form of those tropical type of tornadoes that are very hard to spot and track on radar. A broad area has been defined under a Slight Risk for severe storms mainly stretching from southern Cullman County all the way down the central and eastern parts of the state down into the Florida Panhandle. A Marginal Risk covers nearly the rest of the state of Alabama.

As I mentioned earlier, it will be windy across the area, as wind gusts could reach as high as 45 mph over the western half of the area, while 30-35 mph gusts will be possible over the extreme eastern parts of Central Alabama. Much of Central Alabama has already been placed in a Wind Advisory. Highs will only make it into the lower 70s to the lower 80s, which you would think it would feel really nice, but it will be a muggy day as moisture levels will be very high.

Be sure to have your phones and other informational devices charged up, which includes your NOAA Weather Radio. Please really stay weather aware, as any tornado warnings that may be issued will have a very short lead time and may only last for a few minutes.
