Showers and Storms over the Tennessee Valley; A Dramatic Overhaul in the Forecast

| September 1, 2024 @ 3:01 pm

Sometimes it is better just to start over. I just didn’t put enough emphasis on the Gulf disturbance working its way our way, even though the WPC seemed to be picking up on it.

This afternoon, the forecast is on track. Showers and storms have sagged into North Alabama as expected. The rest of the state is mostly sunny and hot. It is 92F at Birmingham and Tuscaloosa and 93F at Anniston.

Storms cover the Tennessee Valley from Colbert and Lauderdale counties through Lawrence and Limestone to Madison County at this hour. They are also moving into Jackson County. They are not severe but they do have lightning and heavy rain and may be capable of producing gusty winds.

Those storms should weaken as they continue dropping south. They should mostly dissipate before reaching I-59 by 8 p.m. A shower or storm is likely north of I-59 until then though.

The overnight hours should be quiet with lows dropping into the 60s north and 70s south.

Monday storms should be limited to areas south of I-20 with decent sunshine outside storm areas. Highs should be between 90-93 area wide.

Tuesday, the disturbance that is currently in the Gulf may begin to influence Alabama’s weather. Also, an easterly wedge situation will begin to present it self, with cooler conditions in the east and convergence leading to showers and storms in West Central sections by afternoon. Skies will be cloudier as well.

The easterly wedge will become more pronounced by Wednesday with more widespread clouds and cooler conditions. Highs will be in the 80s area wide.

Thursday will feature widespread rain and storms as the Gulf disturbance butts up against high pressure to the north and the easterly wedge. No severe weather is expected, but beneficial rainfall amounts could be in the offing.

Friday, the system should be moving out to the east with rain ending and clearing skies during the afternoon, setting the stage for a nice weekend.

The forecast has been updated. Have a great rest of your Labor Day weekend.
