Storms Just About Out of Central Alabama…New Warning for Pike

| August 18, 2024 @ 7:43 pm

The severe weather threat continues across Southern Alabama, Southern Georgia, and the Northern Florida Panhandle, with damaging winds remaining possible over the next 1-3 hours. Current storm clusters and linear segments have been modestly organized, producing wind gusts up to 37 knots, particularly in Warner Robbins, Georgia. Although the strongest shear is concentrated in the western portion of the storm system, the greatest linear organization is observed further east. A Gulf sea breeze front is moving north, potentially causing brief storm intensification as it interacts with existing outflows. However, as diurnal cooling progresses, a weakening trend in storm intensity is anticipated.

NEW WARNING

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Pike County in southeastern Alabama, including the cities of Troy and Brundidge, until 8:45 PM CDT. The storm, currently near Troy Municipal Airport and moving southeast at 35 mph, is capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Residents should expect potential hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Take immediate precautions by moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
