Severe Thunderstorm Watch Canceled: Update on the Rest of the Night

| August 17, 2024 @ 7:46 pm

It has been a stormy afternoon across Alabama, with several strong to severe storms and several severe thunderstorm warnings.

There have been several reports of damaging winds, mainly trees down.

Here is the radar at 7:40 p.m.

Strong storms are along I-20 from exit 168 (Lincoln) to 199 (Heflin). Additional heavy rain is around exit 210 (Ranburne/Muscadine).

These storms have become outflow dominant and will continue to weaken.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch 632 remains in effect until 9 PM CDT for six counties in Central Alabama, including Calhoun, Clay, Cleburne, Randolph, St. Clair, and Talladega. Cities under the watch include Anniston, Ashland, Heflin, Jacksonville, Lineville, Moody, Pell City, Roanoke, Sylacauga, and Talladega.

Otherwise, the severe weather threat appears to be over although a couple of storms could still form later this evening in the I-59 Corridor northeast of Birmingham.

Storms tomorrow look like they will form in the I-20 Corridor east of Birmingham. They will push southeastward.

Severe weather is again a threat tomorrow. The threat will be southeast of a line from Fayette to Birmingham to Anniston. The best chances for severe weather will be south of a line from Tuscaloosa to Clanton to Alex City. This is of course conditional on where the storms are able to form.

This will be the last update this evening unless more warnings are issued.
