Midday Nowcast: Gradually Transitioning to Summer

HEAT LEVELS RISING: A taste of summer this week across Alabama as highs surge into the upper 80s and lower 90s. Most of the week looks dry, with mainly sunny days, and fair nights. Humidity levels begin to climb by the end of the week and late Thursday and Friday, some showers and storms return to Alabama ahead of a weak front dropping in from the north.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For May 20th, the average high for Birmingham is 85° and the average low is 62°. The record high is 97° set in 1962, while the record low is 41° set in 20021956. We average 0.16” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 2.65” set in 2017.

ACROSS THE USA: A developing storm across the Plains will bring rounds of severe weather for center of the nation the next couple of days. In addition, increasing temperatures and winds with low humidity values will raise wildfire concerns for portions of the Southwest. These temperatures may set new records for southern Texas this week. The northern Great Basin and northern Rockies, cooler conditions arrives.

SEC TOURNAMENT: The SEC baseball tournament begins tomorrow in Hoover, and runs through Sunday. The weather looks very favorable with partly to mostly sunny days, fair nights, and highs around 90 degrees. There is an outside risk of a brief passing shower or storm during the afternoon and evening hours Friday through Sunday, but otherwise the weather will be dry.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Not much change. Hot, dry weather for the southern counties of the state; a few scattered showers and storms for North Alabama, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. Nothing really widespread or heavy. Highs will stay close to 90 degrees all three days.

NEXT WEEK: We should see an increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama by the middle of next week as the upper ridge weakens; highs drop into the mid 80s by then.
