Happy Mother’s Day! Rain Returns to Alabama Tonight
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Thanks for all you do, Mom! It will be a beautiful Mother’s Day across Alabama this year. Well, if you like a few clouds. The good news is any rain will hold off until after midnight tonight for most folks in Central and North Alabama. Temperatures today will be warm, near the normal high temperatures for this part of May, in the lower and middle 80s. Also great weather today for the Regions Traditions golf tournament at Greystone
AURORA CITY: Of course, you probably know by now that solar activity has been very high this weekend. There were spectacular scenes of Aurora’s sighted all across the United States as far south as Key West, even Puerto Rico. Here in Alabama as well! The planetary K index was still very high last night, but it was highest during the pre-dawn hours, and I’m not sure many folks saw the auroras that we saw Friday. Activity will remain high for the next couple of days and perhaps an occasional glance of one, but it doesn’t appear as likely.
NEW WORK WEEK: The new work week will get off to a wet start, with showers and thunderstorms likely, but no severe weather is expected on Monday. Clouds and rain will limit high temperatures to the 70s in most locations. Rainfall amounts will average around 3/4 of an inch, although parts of north Alabama could see one and a quarter inches. On Tuesday, as the surface low tracks to the north of Alabama, showers and thunderstorms will end from the west, and there will be some clearing during the day. Highs on Tuesday will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. The nicest day of the week will come on Wednesday with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies high temperatures will be centered around 80°.
LATE WEEK SYSTEM: Clouds will arrive during the day on Thursday ahead of our next Weather maker and showers and thunderstorms will be on the increase during the overnight hours. Highs Thursday afternoon will be in the lower middle 80s. There will be a slight chance of a severe thunderstorm during the overnight hours Thursday night, with the biggest threat appearing to be damaging winds with some hail. Thursday night lows will be in the 60s. Friday will feature some lingering showers during the morning with some afternoon. Daytime high will top out in the 80s
WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Recent model runs have indicated that an upper low will form and pass near and over Alabama over the weekend. This will keep showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday. The best chances for rain appear to come on Sunday. with Saturday featuring just scattered showers and storms temperatures. Both days will be in the lower 80s. overnight lows will be in the lower 60s.
VOODOO TERRITORY: As we get into the week two forecast, the weather over Alabama will remain unsettled. After the upper low departs Monday night, a flat ridge will develop over Alabama, but that will be unable to protect us from scattered showers and thunderstorms that will form in the heat and humidity each day. It’s not quite your summertime variety of widely scattered afternoon and evening storms yet, because these rain chances will be influenced by a trough to the north and a lingering frontal system.
HOLIDAY PEEK: The first peak at the Memorial Day weekend looks like it will be wet with showers and thunderstorms likely from Friday through Monday. That’s a long way off though, so I’m sure the forecast will get fine tuned quite a bit between now and then.
BEACHCAST: A very nice week along the beautiful beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida is coming to an end with the fine weather continuing. Showers will return Monday with thunderstorms moving in Tuesday. Heavy rain is likely. A cold front will sweep out the rainfall for Wednesday, but the good weather will be short lived as rain returns Thursday, with showers and storms on Friday. The front will stall out for the weekend, leading to more rounds of showers and storms. Highs will be in the lower 80s and lows will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. The rip current that has been high will be low to moderate into midweek. It should increase again by the end of the week. Water temperatures have jumped into the lower 80s.

IN THE TROPICS: Recent model runs still like the idea of a tropical storm forming in the Eastern Pacific off the southwestern coast of Mexico, but are not bullish on it making landfall along the Mexican coast. The tropical Atlantic is quiet for now. That will change soon enough.
DANCING WITH THE STATS: The Pacific Northwest still had a monopoly on record warmth on Saturday. Eugene, OR, got in on the act with a high of 88F. That was enough to tie the record for the date.
WEATHERBRAINS: This week, the panel will entertain Mike Eilts, a familiar name in weather circles. Check out the show at www.WeatherBrains.com. You can also subscribe on iTunes. You can watch the show live on our new YouTube channel for the show. You will be able to see the show on the James Spann 24×7 weather channel on cable or directly over the air on the dot 2 feed.
ON THIS DATE IN 2022: One of the most extensive severe weather outbreaks of 2022 occurred as a derecho moved from eastern Nebraska into Minnesota, producing dozens of tornadoes and widespread damaging winds. Winds gusted as high as 100mph. The same general area would be visited by severe weather on May 30th. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @wxhistorian at Twitter.com.
