Severe Weather Watch Coming Soon
The SPC and NWS Birmingham are both saying a severe weather watch will be coming soon.
It likely will be a severe thunderstorm watch.
The airmass over Alabama is very unstable, with CAPEs approaching 4,000 joules/kg. The bulk speed shear is high, and when combined with robust updrafts, can lead to significant severe weather. Indeed, lapse rates are high, over 7.5C/km. The NWS BMX just issued a significant weather alert on that storm.
Low level helicity is limited for the necessary spin for tornadoes, but boundary interactions could overcome that. The storm in southwestern Jefferson County formed along one of those.
