Late Evening Update

Showers have moved into West Alabama tonight, and a line of storms is progressing eastward across Central Mississippi at this hour.

The storms extend from Kosciusko to Carthage to Jackson to Hazelhurst.

There is a severe thunderstorm warning for areas around Hazelhurst. That is the only warning at this time.

There is a tornado watch still in effect for several counties in Central and Southern Mississippi.

According to Nathan Owens at the National Weather Service Birmingham:

“The line is moving fairly slowly and current timing still puts it entering our western counties around or just after midnight. There have been a few severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings back towards Jackson where the better instability is. The biggest limiting factor for us is whether any instability is pulled up into our area.”

He indicates there is no coordination going on right now for any severe weather watch for Central Alabama. That doesn’t mean that one might not happen, but the indications are that one is not needed at this time.

Tuscaloosa County 1:30-215 AM
City of Tuscaloosa 2:15-2:45 AM

“Following Nathan’s post earlier, the axis of surface-based instability is the main inhibiting factor for our weather hazards tonight. Guidance remains consistent with the north edge of instability being limited to our 3 or 4 southeast counties such as Sumter, Greene, Hale, Marengo Counties. This remains to be good news overall, but there’s always wiggle room when it comes to weather analysis and forecasting.”

No tornadoes have been reported in Mississippi. There have been sporadic reports of wind damage.

A tree limb fell and injured a man near Centreville in Bibb County tonight. It happened at 6:19 pm near Church St and 3rd Ave South.
