You Darn Right It’s Cold Out There This Afternoon

Cold is the only word that I can use without a colorful metaphor in front of it as we have hit the mid-afternoon across Central Alabama. Temperatures are currently ranging from the lower 20s to right at 40 degrees. Haleyville is the coldest at 22 degrees, while the “warm spot” is Troy at 40 degrees. Birmingham was at 30 degrees. Skies are completely sunny across the area, but if you are looking at a satellite image, the white showing up is the snow and ice remaining on the ground after this past week’s winter mischief. While temperatures will remain cold through the weekend, much warmer temperatures can be expected, along with decent rainfall amounts, throughout the work week ahead.

A Hard Freeze Warning goes into effect this evening at 6pm tonight for the following Central Alabama counties: Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston. The warning is set to expire at 10am Sunday morning.

A Wind Chill Advisory continues until 8am Sunday morning for the following counties in the northern part of Central Alabama: Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Etowah, Fayette, Lamar, Marion, St. Clair, Walker, and Winston.

Overnight lows will dip into the lower teens to right around 20 degrees from northwest to southeast across the area, while wind chills will reach the lower single digits in the advisory area.

The good news is that we get back above freezing on Sunday. The bad news is that it will still be rather chilly. No colorful metaphors needed (from me, anyway) as afternoon highs will range from the upper 30s to the mid 40s across the area.
