Winter Storm Watch Expanded to Include Lamar County

An Arctic boundary will push into Northwest ALabama tonight and remain over Northwest Alabmaa and the Tennessee Valley on Sunday into Monday.

Temperatures on Monday will show quite a range across Alabama, with readings near freezing over the Tennessee Valley and Northwest Alabama during the day into the overnight. By sunset Monday evening, the boundary will lie from Pickens through Fayette Counties to near Decatur and Scottsboro.

Snow, sleet and freezing rain will affect areas north of the boundary Monday during the day, with some light rain to the south of it.

The boundary should sink southward Monday night and Tuesday, with some light wintry precipitation possibly along it as it does.

For now, it looks like the best chances for snow accumulation will be over the Tennessee Valley and Northwest Alabama, with 3-4 inches across Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, northern Madison into Jackson County. 1-3 inches will affect the area north of a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Fort Payne.

South of that, up to an inch could affect Tuscaloosa, Fayette, Jasper, Birmingham, Gadsden, and Anniston.

There could be a light glaze of ice from freezing rain as far south as a line from Jackson in Clarke County to Clanton to Wedowee in Randolph County.

Since that map is produced by the NWS Birmingham, it looks a little disjoint around Cullman County. The Huntsville NWS is painting all show there, but there could be a little freezing rain as well.

0.10 inches or less of freezing rain will not cause big icing problems and power outages, but it will make travel hazardous.

Temperatures Monday night will drop into the teens over the Tennessee Valley and Northwest Alabama, with 20s in the I-20 COrridor and lower 30s to the southeast.
