Midday Nowcast: A Mix of Sun and Clouds; Colder Tomorrow

| December 27, 2023 @ 11:12 am

A mix of sun and clouds in the Alabama today, and temperature are seasonal with most locations in the upper 50s. Tomorrow will be sunny, but colder with highs in the 40s for the northern half of the state. More clouds than sunshine return to Alabama Friday, as a cold core upper-level low moves into Alabama. Lows tonight will be around freezing, followed by upper 20s and lower 30s the rest of this week.

THE “S” WORD: Again, lots of excitement about the possibility of snow, but I think there will be more disappointment when it comes to the actual event. The cold core upper-low will bring the chance of light rain/snow showers to the northern third of Alabama Friday and Friday night. With very limited moisture, precipitation amounts will be light. The best chance of seeing a few snow showers is across the northeast corner of Alabama. Some snow flurries are possible down to I-20.

Warm soil conditions and air temperatures above freezing, meaningful snow accumulation isn’t expected. Most communities will reach the mid 40s Friday afternoon. Some grassy areas across Northeast Alabama could become in white spots where heavier snow showers develop. But again, for most places, accumulation isn’t likely. Little to no travel impact is forecast.

WEEKEND WEATHER: It will be dry this weekend and Saturday looks sunny with highs in struggling to climb out of the 40s. Sunday will be sunny as well, and highs should make their way into the mid 50s for most locations. Morning lows will hovering around the freezing mark both morning.

RAIN RETURNS: Another upper-level low will move through the state on Monday and into Tuesday. As it does, some clouds and showers are possible, but at this time, nothing too heavy of widespread. It could also squeeze out some more snow flurries over the northern portions of the state before it exits Alabama on Tuesday. Highs to begin the new year will be in the 40s, which are below average for early January. Looking long range, January is looking colder than December with below average temperatures for at least the first half of the month. But though below average, still no signs of bitterly cold Arctic air invading Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday Auburn will take on Maryland in the Music City Bowl in Nashville (1p CT kickoff)… the sky will be partly sunny with temperatures in the 46-49 degree range during the game.

Monday, January 1, Alabama will face Michigan in the Rose Bowl (4p CT kickoff). For now the weather looks dry and pleasant with a partly sunny sky in Pasadena; temperatures will be in the low 60s.
