Midday Nowcast: Colder and Breezy Wednesday with a Clearing Sky

| December 6, 2023 @ 10:02 am

Colder air is dropping into the state today as highs today will struggle to reach the low 50s for most locations. There is a brisk northwest wind of 10-15 mph, which is making it feel even chillier today. Tonight will feature temperatures in the upper 20s and lower 30s for the northern half of the state. Tomorrow will be warmer with highs in the upper 50s under a sky full of sunshine. Clouds begin to increase Friday and highs should surge well into the 60s.

CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL: The Alabama Super 7 high school football championships are being played today through Friday in Tuscaloosa at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The weather will be cool and dry for all the games; daytime temperatures will be in the 50s Wednesday and Thursday, and in the 60s Friday. For the evening games, temperatures will be mostly in the 40s. No risk of any rain.

WEEKEND RAN AND STORMS: A dynamic weather system will bring rain and thunderstorms back to Alabama late Saturday night into Sunday morning. The SPC maintains a risk of severe thunderstorms west of Alabama Saturday, but no formal risk has been defined for any of Alabama at this time.

Saturday will feature more clouds than sunshine with some scattered showers and warmer temperatures with upper 60s and lower 70s. It will be a very breezy day with southerly winds of 20-25 mph.

For now it looks like the storms will come through at a time when there is little surface based instability across the state. Still, storms could produce strong, gusty winds as they move through. The main window for the heavier storms will come from about 9PM Saturday night through 6AM Sunday. Rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely statewide. The sky will clear during the day Sunday with sunshine returning by afternoon. The day will be breezy and cool with highs in the 50s.

INTO NEXT WEEK: Below average temperatures highlight the forecast for much of next week as a cooler and dry air mass settles into the state. Highs will be in the 50s, while lows will be in the 30s. Most of next week looks day as well.
