Midday Nowcast: Wet is the Word for the Weekend

Rain and storms have returned to Alabama, and they are certainly a welcomed sight. The rain from this morning continues to taper off, and we expect just a few isolated showers the rest of this afternoon and tonight. The sky will stay cloudy and the high today will be in the 60s. The SPC maintains a low end “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for the southern portions of the state, as there could be sufficient instability for a few storms with gusty winds the rest of today.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: For the high school playoff games tonight, the sky will be mostly cloudy with temperatures in the low to mid 60s. We should be in the middle of a break in the rain for most places, but a few scattered showers or storms can’t be ruled out, mainly over the southern half of Alabama.

TOMORROW/SUNDAY: More rain and storms will move into Alabama late tonight, and will continue through tomorrow. The rain could be heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms will likely be involved. Like today, the SPC has a low end “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms defined over the southern counties of the state for the potential for strong, gusty winds. By late tomorrow, most of the rain and storms should be down across South Alabama. For Sunday, some lingering showers are likely, but should wind down during the morning hours. The afternoon will remain cloudy with temperatures in the 60s.

RAINFALL: The heavier rainfall totals will continue to be across South Alabama as an additional 1-3 inches of rain is likely, while another 1-2 inches is possible for the northern half of the state.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For fans headed to the SEC Championship game in Atlanta tomorrow (Alabama vs Georgia; 2:30p CT kickoff at Mercedes Benz Stadium), rain is likely with temperatures in the mid 60s during the afternoon hours. Thankfully the game will be played “indoors” under the roof.

And, tomorrow afternoon Troy hosts Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference title game (Veterans Memorial Stadium, 3p CT kickoff)… the sky will be cloudy with periods of rain likely. A thunderstorm is possible as well; temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60s.

NEXT WEEK: Next week still looks relatively quiet and dry. We will stick with highs in the 50s and 60s, and lows mainly in the 30s and 40s. Not too far from seasonal values for early December.
