Midday Nowcast: Hot, Hotter, Hottest

The strong upper high covers much of the U.S. east of the Rockies, brining to hottest weather of 2023 to much of the country. That includes Alabama, where our weather remains mostly dry and very hot the rest of this week. Highs this week across Alabama will range from 95°-105°. Heat index value values will be in the 105°-110° range, and heat advisories are in effect through Wednesday, and these will likely continue into the weekend.

Rain chances are near zero most of the week due to the sinking air under the upper high. The days will be mostly sunny days and fair nights. An isolated storm could pop up somewhere across Alabama on a day or two, but most of the state will stay dry through the week.

WEEKEND WEATHER: The weather won’t change much Saturday with very hot and mainly dry conditions, but heat levels begin to drop Sunday as the upper ridge weakens and shifts to the west. Sunday’s high will be in the low 90s, and a few afternoon showers or storms could pop up thanks to the cooler air aloft.

NEXT WEEK: Rolling into the final week of August, highs look to drop into the upper 80s through the first half of the week, and we will mention a chance of scattered showers and storms daily, more typical of later August in Alabama.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Harold made landfall in South Texas this morning, and will dissipate over Northern Mexico the next couple of days. Gert will dissipate today. Franklin is drifting toward the west near 3 mph. The system should turn northward today. On the forecast track, the center of Franklin is forecast to reach the southern coast of Hispaniola on Wednesday, traverse the island and move off of the northern coast on Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph. Some strengthening is forecast before Franklin reaches Hispaniola. As the system emerges back into the southwest Atlantic, it is expected to strengthening into a hurricane by the end of the week.

Two other features in the eastern Atlantic could develop over the next several days, but are no threat to the U.S.
