Strong Storms Dropping Southeast Over North Central Alabama

| July 30, 2023 @ 9:49 am

Well, the convection allowing models were sort of right since Friday night, predicting that a storm complex would drop into Alabama from Tennessee. That has happened and the storms now cover parts of Winston and Cullman Counties. They will move into northeastern Walker, the rest of Cullman and into Blount and St. Clair Counties over the next hour.

The NWS in Birmingham has issued a significant weather alert for parts of Blount and St. Clair for 40 mph winds

The models think they will weaken, but they show no signs of that and could actually strengthen as they push southeast in the general direction of Leeds, Moody, Pell City, Lake Logan Martin, Talladega and Oxford.

Make sure to be inside a substantial structure as these storms approach They will also have lots of dangerous lightning and heavy rain.

Other storms will form today. It appears they may be mainly south of I-20. They should commence in the noon to 1 p.m. time frame. They will also have strong gusty winds, some small hail, lightning, and torrential rains.

The SPC does have much of the area south of US-278 in a marginal risk for severe weather today, that’s level 1 out of 5.
