Active Storms Across the Area, But Severe Risk Downgraded a Level

| July 9, 2023 @ 5:16 pm

Here is a look at the Alabama weather situation just after 5 p.m.

Thunderstorms continue over Central Alabama late this afternoon. They are concentrated over the western half of the state.

Storms are pretty strong in the Tuscaloosa area up to the southwest of Birmingham

Other storms extend from Greensboro through Uniontown down to Pine Hill and to south of Camden.

Other strong storms extend from the Montgomery area generally from South of Jemison, to Wetumpka, Millbrook to Montgomery. These storms are moving into Macon and southern Tallapoosa Counties.

From there, they extend back to the south along US 331 into South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

In the Meridian MS area, strong thunderstorms are just north of I-20/59. Also, another strong thunderstorm is near DeKalb MS, as part of a line of storms that extends from Columbus down to Shubuta, They are moving to the east and will affects parts of Sumter and Choctaw counties.

Good news is the SPC has downgraded the severe weather risk over Alabama now to a marginal risk (level 1 of 5 from the earlier slight, or level 2 of 5). The storms over Mississippi have not intensified as anticipated, but still some of the stronger storms could have gusty winds to 40 miles an hour, torrential rainfall, and also deadly lightning.

Our old MCS is crossing the Mississippi River south of Memphis. There is 1,500-3,000 joules of CAPE ahead of it, but it is unclear whether it will intensify and cause storms into Alabama later this evening. It appears that the airmass over western Alabama will be worked over by the current convection, which would keep the likelihood of that happening pretty low.
