NWS Birmingham Allows Tornado Watch to Expire; Late Evening Weather Check

| February 16, 2023 @ 8:18 pm

RADAR CHECK: As of 8:10 pm, rain and a few thunderstorms remain spread across much of North/Central Alabama, but all of this activity is well below severe limits at this point. The atmosphere continues to grow more stable as we go, and the threat of severe storms is really low, but not zero. Due to that reason, NWS Birmingham has allowed the Tornado Watch to expire at 8 pm.

Instability has now dropped well below 500 J/kg over the northern and eastern parts of North/Central Alabama, while those values are now well below 1,000 J/kg over the west and southwestern parts of the area. Significant Tornado Parameter values are now well below 1.0 across the area.

While we can’t completely stick a fork in it and say we’re done for the night, the odds of any storms to become severe through the rest of the night is really, really low.
