First Tornado Watch Expires; Lamar Co. Removed from Second Tornado Watch

| February 16, 2023 @ 7:04 pm

NWS Birmingham updates the Tornado Watch (cancels Lamar, continues Autauga, Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Dallas, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Marengo, Perry, Pickens, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Winston) until 8 pm.

NWS Huntsville has allowed the Tornado Watch for their remaining counties to expire at 7 pm.

The Storm Prediction Center has removed the Enhanced Risk for severe storms from the latest outlook update. much of North/Central Alabama remains in a Slight Risk, while nearly the rest is in a Marginal Risk.

Instability values continue to plummet as the atmosphere continues to stabilize. The northern and eastern parts of the area have fallen down to 500 J/kg and lower, while the western and southwestern parts of the area remain in more unstable air, ranging from 500-1,000 J/kg.

NWS Birmingham is stating that a new watch is highly unlikely as the severe threat is not widespread enough. There remains an outside possibility of a short-lived tornado, so we’ll need to stay aware for a few more hours.
