Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for the South & Southeastern Parts of Central Alabama Until 8 pm

The Storm Prediction Center along with NWS Birmingham has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8 pm for the following counties in Central Alabama: Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Chambers, Dallas, Elmore, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, Russell, and Tallapoosa.

Wind gusts up to 70 mph, isolated hail up to quarter-size, and a couple of tornadoes will be possible across the watch area. Here is the text from the SPC:

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a

• Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
— Southern Alabama
— Central Georgia
— Southern South Carolina

• Effective this Thursday afternoon and evening from 205 PM until 900 PM EST.

• Primary threats include…
— Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible
— Isolated large hail events to 1 inch in diameter possible
— A tornado or two possible

SUMMARY… Thunderstorms are expected to intensify this afternoon along and ahead of a boundary sagging into the region. A few severe storms are possible, with damaging wind gusts being the main risk. An isolated tornado or two is also possible.

The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 45 statute miles north and south of a line from 45 miles west southwest of Selma AL to 60 miles northeast of Savannah GA.

REMEMBER… A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.
