Strong to Severe Storms Continue to Move Through North/Central Alabama

| December 6, 2021 @ 9:16 am

As of 9 am, a line of rain and storms continue to push across portions of North/Central Alabama, mainly stretching from Fort Payne to Tuscaloosa and back to Carrollton. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning continues for portions of Fayette, Pickens, and Tuscaloosa counties until 9:30 am for the threat of potential damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph. These warned storms are moving to the east at 40 mph. While the rest of the storms are staying behaved at the moment, some gusty winds are occurring in the stronger cells.

The cold front is moving into the northwestern parts of the state and is moving into an area of strong wind shear and weak instability. The good news is that the small tornado threat continues to slowly diminish as time goes on, as the winds at the surface will become more unidirectional.

The front should reach the Birmingham metropolitan area before noon, and we may continue to see some instability form out ahead of the front throughout the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon hours thanks to daytime heating. However, the main support for this system will be lifting further northeastward away from the area and will bring the severe threat to an end. The threat will most likely continue until around 1 pm this afternoon.

We’ll have updates throughout the morning until the threat dissipates. Stay weather aware!
