Numerous Flash Flood Warnings: Flash Flood Emergency from Birmingham to Pelham

More strong storms are moving across northern Shelby and into southern Jefferson County where flooding is already ongoing.

Numerous water rescues are occurring around Hoover and in northern Shelby County.

The NWS in Birmingham has issued a rare Flash Flood Emergency for the I-65 Corridor from Birmingham to Pelham:

…FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1015 PM CDT THIS
EVENING FOR EASTERN JEFFERSON AND NORTHWESTERN SHELBY COUNTIES…

At 844 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy
rain across the warned area. Between 4 and 7 inches of rain have
fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are possible in
the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin
shortly.

This is a FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY for Birmingham to Pelham. This is a
PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!

HAZARD…Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing
flash flooding.

IMPACT…This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER
GROUND NOW! Life threatening flash flooding of low water
crossings, small creeks and streams, urban areas,
highways, streets and underpasses.

Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Alabaster, Bessemer, Homewood,
Pelham, Mountain Brook, Trussville, Helena, Gardendale, Irondale,
Fairfield, Chelsea, Fultondale, Center Point, Clay, Pinson,
Tarrant and Midfield.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Move to higher ground now! This is an extremely dangerous and
life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are
fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become
unstable and unsafe.
