Daily Rainfall Record for Birmingham Will Be Shattered: Additional Heavy Rain/Storms Moving into the Metro Now

| May 4, 2021 @ 3:50 pm

Heavy rain and storms are moving into the Birmingham Metro now from the west and southwest.

The storms are not severe at this time, but they will produce torrential rain, gusty winds, and a lot of lightning. The severe threat is now pushing south of I-20 for the time being, but we can’t rule out these storms becoming severe.

The additional heavy rain will also exacerbate the flooding situation. Flash flood warnings continue for most of Metro Birmingham as well as points to the east over to Anniston. There have been numerous reports of flooding around Birmingham, Homewood, Hoover, and Mountain Brook. Be alert to flooding and remember what we always say, Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

In addition, tree limbs and trees could fall on homes, auto, or people, so be inside an interior room as they pass through.

A powerful line of storms over Mississippi is approaching the Alabama border. The biggest threat for wind damage and tornadoes will be south of I-20, but we can’t rule out either for areas north of I-20. A wind to 75 mph was just measured in Philadelphia, MS at the Neshoba County Emergency Operations Center. Tornado Warnings are in effect for parts of Newton, Neshoba, Jasper, and Clarke Counties.

The original tornado watch will expire at 4 p.m. for the northern counties of Central Alabama. A new tornado watch that goes until 10 p.m. has just been issued for the southern Counties of Central Alabama as well as Southwest Alabama.

Stay alert for all modes of severe weather, including tornadoes, and, and hail, as well as the possibility of flash flooding.

NEW RAINFALL RECORD
The daily rainfall record for Birmingham is 2.04 inches in 1906. We had measured 2.12 inches through 3 p.m. before additional heavy rain began arriving. It looks like we will easily beat the old record, by a good bit.
