Warm Tomorrow; Showers Wednesday

| April 12, 2021 @ 3:10 pm

SUNNY, WARM AFTERNOON: Temperatures are in the 80 to 85 degree range across Alabama this afternoon with a cloudless sky. The average high for April 12 at Birmingham is 75. Tonight will be clear with a low mostly in the mid to upper 50s.

The weather tomorrow stays warm and dry… with a partly sunny sky we expect a high in the mid 80s; for many communities it will be the warmest day so far this year. Clouds will increase tomorrow night.

SHOWERS RETURN: Wednesday will be cloudy and cooler, and a disturbance will bring potential for a few rain showers to the northern half of the state. But, the most widespread and heaviest rain will come over the southern counties, where some thunder is possible. On the positive side, severe thunderstorms are not expected. The high Wednesday will be in the mid 70s, right at the seasonal average.

North/Central Alabama will be dry and cooler Thursday, with gradual clearing possible with highs in the upper 60s. Showers will remain possible, however, over the southern quarter of the state. Another disturbance will keep the chance of rain in the forecast for South Alabama Friday, and we will mention a chance of rain statewide Friday night. Moisture will be limited, and rain amounts should be on the light side.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Looks like clouds will linger over the state Saturday, and some scattered light rain can’t be ruled out. But, not an all day rain or a “wash out” situation. The sky becomes partly sunny Sunday as drier air returns to the state; highs over the weekend will be in the 67-70 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: Still no signals of any severe weather issues from global models for now. Much of the week will be dry with seasonal temperatures… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: A series of significant tornadoes raked Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois. Antlers, Oklahoma were nearly obliterated by a massive F5 tornado that zigzagged from southwest to northeast across the town. 69 people died in the twister. Another tornado killed eight people in Oklahoma City. The disaster was overshadowed by the loss of President Franklin Roosevelt, who died suddenly at his vacation home at Warm Springs, Georgia.

ON THIS DATE ONE YEAR AGO: The 2020 Easter tornado outbreak was underway… during the two-day outbreak, a total of 140 tornadoes touched down across 10 states, inflicting widespread and locally catastrophic damage. The strongest tornado was rated high-end EF4 and occurred in Southern Mississippi, producing estimated winds of 190 mph, reaching a width of 2.25 miles, and causing eight deaths. In Alabama, over two dozen tornadoes touched down.
