Severe Weather Threat for Areas South of the Front Today
A strong cold front will push through Alabama today, producing rain and thunderstorms.
South of the rain-cooled air to the north, temperatures will warm into the 70s, and instability value will climb into the 1,500-2,000 j/kg range. A line of storms will form along the front and push southeastward, encountering better instability and decent bulk wind shear, and some of the storms will become severe. The main threat will be damaging wind, with some hail. There is a small chance of a tornado as well, but that chance is pretty small.
The SPC maintains a marginal risk (1/5) for areas northwest of I-59, and a slight risk (2/5) for areas south of I-59.
Stay weather aware today, both for the threat of severe weather, but also for flooding. A flash flood watch continues into this evening for the northern third of the state roughly from Birmingham northward.
And get ready for freezing conditions areawide tomorrow night and Friday night. There could be some frost tonight in areas that are protected from the wind, but the main threat will come Thursday and Friday nights. Freeze warnings will likely be required later today.
