Clouds Linger Tonight; Slow Clearing Tomorrow

| January 11, 2021 @ 2:51 pm

RADAR CHECK: We have lingering patches of light rain over the eastern half of Alabama this afternoon; the snow has needed over the northern and western counties. Some of the heaviest snow this morning was over Pickens, Lamar, Fayette, Marion, and Winston counties, where a few spots saw two to three inches. The rain moves out of the state this evening, but clouds linger tonight. We will drop into the low 30s early tomorrow morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: Clouds tomorrow morning should give way to some sunshine by afternoon; the high will be in the 45-50 degree range. Then, expect a good supply of sunshine through mid-week with a warming trend. We reach the low 50s, Wednesday, followed by upper 50s Thursday. Then, on Friday, a cold front will pass thorough the state with potential for a little scattered light rain. Moisture will be very limited, and rain totals will be light and spotty. Temperatures will likely fall into the 40s Friday afternoon with a brisk north wind following the frontal passage.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be dry; the sky partly to mostly sunny with a high near 50 degrees. Clouds increase Sunday, and we are seeing hints in global models that some light precipitation might be a possibility Sunday night. Too early to know if we see anything significant, or if snow will be involved. Just something to watch for now. Sunday’s high will be in the mid to upper 40s.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks dry Monday and Tuesday; next chance of rain seems to come late Wednesday, Wednesday night, or Thursday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1918: A strong area of low pressure brought snow and bitter cold temperatures to Chattanooga, Little Rock, and Shreveport. Birmingham picked up about one inch of snow. In far Southeast Alabama, an estimated F3 tornado virtually damaged every building in the town of Webb in Houston County. The tornado leveled one rural school, killing one teacher and seven students.
