Delta to Bring a Tornado Risk to Alabama Today
Tropical Storm Delta will continue to weaken this morning as it moves northeast, likely being downgraded to a depression later this morning as it moves into western Mississippi.
The SPC has issued a “Marginal Risk” its level 1/5 for all of Alabama today and a “Slight Risk”, its level 2/5 for a large chunk of Central Alabama mainly for the threat of tornadoes.
Instability levels will increase during the day to the south and east of the cyclone:
Low-level shear values will be sufficient that where thunderstorms form, they will exhibit rotation:
And tornadoes will be possible. This is the Significant Tornado Parameter for 3 pp.m. today.
While we don’t expect large, violent tornadoes today, we can get significant tornadoes after landfalling tropical cyclones. (Ike comes to mind from 2005.) So review your tornado safety plans, know where you will go wherever you will be if a tornado warning is issued, and have reliable sources for getting warnings today.
