Sharp-Dressed Men Love Knotted’s Alabama-Made Bow Ties

As soon as he picks up the phone for an interview, Jay Hendrix apologizes for any noise in the background. “You might hear sewing machines,” he says. “I’ve got some stuff to get out this afternoon.” He’s also on daddy duty with his 3-year-old daughter.

Hendrix is often sewing away in his workshop in the west Mobile home he shares with his wife, Adrian (who goes by A.J.). His business, Knotted Handcrafted Bowties, specializes in custom, hand-sewn bow ties that are sold online and at art festivals and shows all over the Southeast.

“I make every single one,” he says – thus the warning about the occasional whir of the sewing machine. “They’re all hand-cut. The only thing pre-made is the fabric.”
