Moderate to Heavy Rain Moving Through Parts of Central Alabama This Evening

| April 22, 2020 @ 9:47 pm

A passing upper level disturbance is producing rain across much of Central Alabama tonight.

The heaviest rain is moving through Pickens County around Aliceville.

There is no thunder involved, and certainly no threat of severe weather from this activity.

The storms over Louisiana continue to be severe tonight. A dangerous tornado just passed just south of Alexandria, Louisiana. There was a strong tornado debris signature with this cell that has produced several tornadoes back into eastern Texas.

This activity will move into Alabama after midnight. It will likely strengthen as it gets into Alabama due to an increasing low level jet and increasing upper level winds.

There will be a threat of damaging winds and hail overnight as these storms move across the state. The tornado threat is low, but straight line winds can cause damage that is as bad as a tornado.

Have a way to receive warnings overnight that will wake you, like a NOAA Weatheradio, and take any severe thunderstorm warnings seriously.

We will have a continuous play by play of the storms as they move into Alabama later tonight.

A flash flood watch will go into effect for much of the western half of Central Alabama later tonight. Rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are likely.

More storms may form during the day, and those could be severe as well with very large hail and even the chance of tornadoes.
