Windy Day; Occasional Showers/Storms

| October 26, 2019 @ 6:31 am

Here is a look at what to expect across Alabama today…

WINDY: A wind advisory is in effect for most of the state today. Keep in mind a tropical storm (Olga) moved onto the Louisiana coast overnight; it is now “post-tropical” after merging with the cold front, but a tight pressure gradient will produce southeast winds of 15-25 mph today with higher gusts. Be sure and secure loose objects… a few scattered power outages are possible with some tree limbs blown down.

WET AT TIMES: A flash flood watch remains in effect for the western third of the state. The rain has tapered off greatly early this morning, but additional showers and storms will form late this morning and during the afternoon hours. It is important to note it will note rain all day today; today’s rain will not be like yesterday, when a large stratiform rain mass covered the state for many hours. The activity today will be more convective in nature, meaning it won’t be as widespread.

But a few heavy downpours are possible this afternoon that could create a few isolated, short term flooding issues. Additional rain amounts today of around 1/2 to 1 inch are likely for most places.

STRONG/SEVERE STORMS: SPC has most of Alabama in a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe storms for most of the state today. This is a fairly low end threat with very little surface based instability and weak lapse rates. An isolated, brief tornado can’t be totally ruled out, but is unlikely. A few storms could produce locally damaging wind gusts. Stronger storms will come from roughly 11am-6pm, ahead of the cold front.

MAGIC CITY CLASSIC: Just a few scattered showers in the Birmingham metro for the parade this morning. For the game at Legion Field (2:30p CT kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with a few passing showers or storms. Temperatures will be mid 70s at kickoff, falling to near 70 by the final whistle. The rain will be over by the time the post-game concert begins.

AUBURN AT LSU: The sky will be partly sunny (2:30p CT kickoff in Baton Rouge), with temperatures in the 60s.

ARKANSAS AT ALABAMA: Rain ends well before kickoff (6:00p CT at Bryant-Denny Stadium); the game will be played with dry conditions and a mostly cloudy sky. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60s.

Dry weather returns to Alabama tomorrow and early next week.
