We Have Three Tropical Storms On The Board Over The Tropical Atlantic

| September 23, 2019 @ 10:13 am

As of 10:00 am this morning, we have two tropical storms on the western side of the Tropical Atlantic Ocean and a newly formed tropical storm just off of the West African Coast.

Tropical Storm Jerry continues to move to the north-northwest this morning at 7 MPH as maximum sustained winds are still topping out at 65 MPH. This north-northwestward movement will continue until sometime tomorrow morning when a sharp turn to the east-northeast is forecast. Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Bermuda as Jerry will pass by to the north on late Tuesday through the first half of Wednesday. Jerry is forecast to stay at tropical storm strength and become a fish storm after passing Bermuda.

Tropical Storm Karen is poorly organized at this point and is only maxing out at 40 MPH as it travels to the north-northwest at 12 MPH. The good news for Puerto Rico is that Karen is not expected to strengthen throughout the next several days until she is well north of the island. On Friday, a sharp turn to the west is expected but movement will be very slow at that point, according to the official track. By then, it is possible that Karen could reach hurricane strength. We’ll have to watch Karen closely as we do not know where she will go after Friday. The GFS is hinting that Karen could continue westward and cross over the Florida peninsula and make it into the Gulf of Mexico by late Tuesday, October 1st, but we all know we can’t trust that at this point as it is well out in Voodoo Land.

And the newest tropical storm to be added to the party, Lorenzo, is located just to the west of the West African coast and is moving to the west at 18 MPH. Lorenzo has all of the signs of being a fish storm as it is expected to start curving to the northwest as early as late Thursday. It is expected to become a hurricane by late tomorrow or early Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds are at 40 MPH at this point.
