A.G. Gaston Motel Marks 65th Anniversary Of Its Opening With Renovation Plans

The A.G. Gaston Motel is considered the historic centerpiece of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument, a designation President Barack Obama made in 2017 for the Civil Rights District.
The motel, one of the creations of Birmingham businessman A.G. Gaston, opened July 1, 1954. It served a major role in the civil rights movement, providing lodging, dining and entertainment options for African-Americans traveling through the South.
