Summertime Is Here, And Boy… Don’t It Feel Like It
At 12:35 pm, we are already up into the upper 80s to the mid-90s across Central Alabama with Tuscaloosa leading the way at 95 degrees. Birmingham was at 91 while several locations were tied at 88 degrees as the cool spots. Not much in the way of rainfall to provide any heat relief at the moment, unless you are located in the extreme southeastern portions of the area where a few isolated showers have popped up.
For the rest of the daylight hours today, we will have partly cloudy skies with a chance of a few scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area. Afternoon highs will be in the lower to mid-90s across the area with heat index values in the 95-103 degree range. For tonight, we may see an increase in coverage of showers and thunderstorms, some of which may become strong to marginally severe. We may also have a weakening MCS move in from the north tonight as well, but we’ll have to watch and see if it survives the trip and exactly where it goes. Lows will be in the lower to mid-70s.
We do have a Marginal Risk of severe storms for much of the area and up into North Alabama for the rest of the day, but the good news is that the SPC has removed the Slight Risk from the North Alabama locations. The main threat will be from isolated damaging downburst winds up to 60 MPH.
With ridging in place, it will force most of the afternoon shower and thunderstorm development to the eastern half of the area on Saturday. Skies will be partly cloudy with a small chance of isolated to scattered afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be in the lower to mid-90s with heat index values reaching 95-103 degrees.
