SPC Mesoscale Discussion: Tornado Watch 157…

| May 9, 2019 @ 1:34 pm

SUMMARY…Severe risk — including potential for a couple of brief tornadoes — continues.

DISCUSSION…Latest radar loop shows a band of storms extending from northeast Alabama southwest into southwestern Louisiana at this time, with locally more vigorous updrafts occurring within the portion of the band crossing WW 157 at this time. The airmass ahead of the ongoing storms remains moist/moderately unstable, which will support continuation of the ongoing storms. Some weakening of the wind field has been observed across the area — as has been anticipated per model guidance. Still, occasional/transient circulations continue with stronger updrafts embedded within the convective band. As such, risk for locally damaging winds, and a brief tornado or two, remain possible. As storms continue advancing eastward/southeastward, we will continue to monitor downstream areas, where a local watch extension — or new WW issuance — could become necessary over the next hour or so.
