Rain Is Changing Over To Snow In The Northwestern Parts Of The Area
The colder air is catching up with the backside of the rain as decent snow is being reported across the south-central and southwestern parts of Mississippi. As far as Alabama’s situation, it is still mostly rainfall but we can see the rain changing over to snow in the northwestern parts of the state. Snow was reported falling in Hamilton and Winfield, along with Huntsville and Madison. Big flakes were being reported falling at the Walker/Marion County line on I-22 (thanks Meaghan Thomas).
Temperatures at 3:06 am were running in the lower 30s to right at 50 degrees across Central Alabama. Back over in Mississippi, temperatures were in the mid-20s to the mid-30s in the northern half of the state, to the mid-30s to the upper 40s in the southern half. Jackson is at 33 degrees with a really decent snowfall occurring.
As of now, the potential for the greatest snowfall to occur will be along the I-59/20 corridor from roughly the Birmingham metropolitan area back to the southwest to the state line where a Winter Storm Warning continues until 12:00 pm today. Latest projections continue to show the potential for up to 2-3 inches of accumulated snowfall amounts for those locations in the warning, with roughly 1 inch or less for the locations in the Winter Weather Advisory. The main impact of the snowfall in the warning areas will be from now through 7:00 am at this point.
We’ll continue to have frequent updates throughout the morning. Check back often.
