Merry Christmas: A Few Sprinkles Out There At Midday
As of 11:45 AM on this Christmas Day, we have a few sprinkles out there over the north and northwest corner of Central Alabama, mainly over parts of Etowah, Blount, Cullman, Walker, Fayette, and Lamar counties. These are moving to the east-southeast but should not cause a big dampening for your holiday.
Much of the northern half of Central Alabama is covered in a good amount of clouds, while the southern half is mainly clear and sunny. We have a wide range in temperatures thanks to the cloud cover, as we are seeing readings in the mid-40s to the lower 60s across the area from north to south. A good example is Haleyville is currently at 46 degrees while Troy is currently at 63 degrees. Birmingham is right on the fringe of the cloud cover at 52 degrees.
We’ll continue to have a small chance of sprinkles to very light showers mainly north of I-20 and east of I-65 throughout the rest of the afternoon and into the early evening hours. Highs should top out in the upper 40s to the lower 60s across the area from northwest to southeast. Clouds will continue to move across the northwestern quarter of Central Alabama throughout the day, while roughly south of a line from Demopolis to Clanton to Alexander City will continue to have partly to mostly clear skies. Lows will be in the upper 30s to the mid-40s.
The good news is that we look to stay dry on Wednesday as we’ll begin a warmup due to the flow of warmer and moister air begins to be advected into the area from the gulf out ahead of our next big rain-making system. We’ll have a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day and afternoon highs will top out in the lower to mid-60s. Much of the area should stay dry during the evening hours, but showers will start to move in from the southwest after midnight. Once it starts to rain, we may not see a break in the wet stuff until sometime late on Friday. Lows will be in the upper 40s to the lower 50s.
These are the forecasted rainfall totals from the WPC office of the National Weather Service, showing rainfall totals of 2.00-3.00 inches from now until 12:00 AM Saturday. We may have to watch for some flooding issues on Thursday and Friday, especially in poor drainage areas.
I hope you have had a Happy Christmas so far… and I wish for the rest of your day to be filled with great tidings and joy.
