Tropical Storm Expected To Form In The Gulf Of Mexico

| October 6, 2018 @ 8:09 am

A tropical storm is expected to form (NHC with a 90 percent chance now) in the Gulf of Mexico in coming days. The name will be Michael.

There are a number of large outdoor events coming up in Alabama, including the National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, and race weekend at Talladega. It is important to understand that until the system gets organized and develops a low level circulation center, and we get data from NOAA/AF aircraft, there is little skill in forecasting the track and intensity.

Here are some very preliminary ideas on the table…

*The system should be near the coast Wednesday or Thursday. Weather conditions should improve along the beaches by Friday and the weekend.

*Dangerous rip currents are likely on the Alabama and Florida Panhandle coasts until landfall.

*Highest threat of landfall for now is in a broad zone from Biloxi Mississippi east to Cedar Key Florida.

*WPC suggests the axis of heaviest rain will be over South and East Alabama.

*A fair chance the system remains below hurricane strength; heavy rain and flooding seems to be the primary threat at this time.

*For now, the weather looks mostly dry and cooler in Alabama over the weekend (October 13-14)

Remember, this is very preliminary and subject to change . Once we get a low level center and better data, we can give you much more detailed information. Stay tuned…
