On This Day In Alabama History: Alabama-Born Astronaut Returns To Earth

September 20, 1992: Astronaut Mae C. Jemison returned to Earth aboard the Endeavour space shuttle. The science mission specialist logged 190 hours, 30 minutes and 23 seconds in space. Born in Decatur in Morgan County, Jemison became the first African-American woman to go to space. She has been a tireless advocate for science education and space exploration.
